Touring Weihai
We are still waiting for our boats to be released from customs. Hoping to get started later today... lots to do to be ready for the teams that arrive next weekend!
In the meantime, we had a guided tour of some of the local sites yesterday. The city of Weihai is small by China standards, but at 2 million people! Pretty large by my thinking. Most housing is high rise. The area is coastal and hilly. Modern, clean and very green and well manicured. Lots of crops are grown in the outlying areas. Fishing boats ply the local waters. Driving (not me!) is wild. Taxis dodge in and out of lanes. Pedestrians DO NOT have the right of way here. Seems they get an over-lap and gain lane rights over the other cars! Nascar trained drivers?

Site Inspection
We looked in on the progress at the event site yesterday. Large sandy beach, clear cool water and flat due to the side-offshore winds thus far.
The hosts are nearing completion of the club house building which will be the headquarters for the event. It is to be designated the IHCA permanent China competition venue and Weihai sail training base after the Worlds are completed. Very exciting for the local sailing community!

Hobie Cat Company – Factory Report
The Factory Teams from Hobie Cat Australia and Hobie Cat USA are now on site to start the boat building process. The teams will build 60 identical Hobie Cat® 16’s, for the 19th Hobie World Championships in Weihai China.
The containers are at the port and should arrive on the race site this Monday to start the boat building process. Hobie Cat Australasia’s managing director, Steve Fields says; “This is an exciting time for us, to be able to prepare the boats for the sailors from around the world and to see a new Hobie Cat 16 World Champion crowned”. Steve went on to say; “The city of Weihai, the Seaview Hotel staff and the China Worlds committee have been great to work with and they have gone out of their way to assist us with the running of the event at this early stage.
Hobie Cat USA’s Matt Miller replied; “ I must also say that the beach we are running the event from is perhaps the best beach we have had in many years! Like Steve, we look forward to running the event and seeing a new World Champion crowned.”
